Review — Dark Wolf by Christine Feehan

Well, I was totally caught up in this book and turned the page not realizing it was the last one! That’s a good thing and a bad thing. Good because I was so lost within the story, I wasn’t paying attention to the pages. Bad, well, because it just ended! I wouldn’t even say it ended as a cliffhanger. Usually, even with cliffy endings, there’s some sort of resolution within the subplots, but not with DARK WOLF. I was left stranded. Although this ending ensures I’ll continue reading, I just wish there would’ve been a little bit more closure.

I love Christine Feehan’s Carpathian series. The characters are always so well developed that I can’t help but fall in love with them. The characters in DARK WOLF are no different. My heart went out to Dimitri for the torture he endured. Sky also has had her share of pain, but she’s really proving herself and what she’s capable of achieving. Although I had a little bit of a hard time connecting with Sky because she’s so young in my mind, she’s truly become a remarkable woman.

Even with the ending and such a young heroine, I’m definitely glad I read DARK WOLF. Ms. Feehan surely didn’t disappoint.

Review — Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost

HALFWAY to the GRAVE took me my surprise. Although it was recommended by a friend, I honestly didn’t think I’d enjoy it as much as I did to the point I really, really wanted to skip to the end to read what happened. (I haven’t had that urge in a long time and thought I’d broken that bad habit).

Catherine “Cat” is a 22 year old half vampire, half human misfit who has hidden her abilities from the world her entire life. She hunts and kills vampires as revenge for her mom who was raped by a vampire. In a botched attempt at seducing and killing Bones (a very old vampire), she gets kidnapped and ultimately is forced to help him in his job as a vampire bounty hunter.

Cat is a delicious, tough heroine with enough insecurities and vulnerabilities to make me root for her from the beginning. And Bones? Well, he’s hot, gorgeous, and very territorial over Cat. What’s not to like? Bones also isn’t the typical vampire I tend to read about because he’s more open with his feelings toward Cat, which also makes him vulnerable in a way…and that’s a nice change from the alpha male stereotype. In fact, he expresses his love much sooner than Cat.

The ending only confirmed that I must read the next in the series to see what happens to this emerging couple, and what a great couple they appear to be.

Focused. Strong. True.

Review — Archangel’s Storm by Nalini Singh

Jason, the spymaster, was the focus of this book in the Guild Hunter series. What a tough childhood Jason endured, a childhood that molded his adult life. Distancing himself from people and the rest of the world, I couldn’t help but feel for him and his self-imposed aloneness. Enter Mahiya, a beautiful princess who also has endured pain and loneliness, but has fought to remain true to her spirit instead of becoming jaded. I loved their journey together, how they found the courage to trust each other, and as a result, make each other happy. The ending was beautiful.

Raphael’s seven are such an amazing group of broken men. I can’t help but enjoy their stories and hope they all find their happily-ever-after.

Strong. Focused. True.

Review — Consumed by Rebecca Zanetti

CONSUMED wasn’t my favorite in the Dark Protector series. I had a hard time connecting with the main characters, Katie and Jordan, who are cougar shifters. (I think I might have a problem with shifters as the driving characters in a story. However, I need to analyze this revelation further by reading more shifter books before I come to a definite conclusion, and that’s a different story).

But with that said, I still really enjoyed this book. Ms. Zanetti has introduced several characters in the Dark Protectors series and she excels by including tidbits about them throughout her books. She doesn’t completely abandon them after telling their story, but continues their storylines as she releases new books. So, even though my favorite characters were secondary in CONSUMED, I got to see how they were doing and learn how they’ve fared. (I’m so impressed she can illustrate their different personalities and weave their information throughout the main story). And because she included them in CONSUMED, I’m totally stoked about PROVOKED. Just hold on Jase, your brothers will save you! I know they will!

Review — Dark Guardian by Christine Feehan

Ahhhh, this was such a great read! Lucian is a fantastic hero and virtually unstoppable. He’s an ancient protector of his race who sacrificed the latter part of his existence to save his brother, Gabriel. I also read, DARK LEGEND, the previous book in the Carpathian series, which is mainly about Gabriel. But Ms. Feehan devoted so much attention to Lucian that by the time I finished it, I couldn’t wait to read Lucian’s story in DARK GUARDIAN. Lucian is probably one of my favorite Carpathians, although I really liked Mikhail in DARK PRINCE. Jax, our heroine, is one tough nut! You don’t mess with her and don’t call her small! Initially, she has a hard time accepting Lucian and who he is (and who wouldn’t), but she comes around in the end.

Through Ms. Feehan’s flowing and descriptive style, she eloquently illustrates that there’s a lifemate out there for everyone, some just might have to wait a bit longer than others.

I really enjoyed this one.

Review — Torn (Beneath the Shadows of Evil #2) by Jolynn Raymond

TORN begins exactly where TAKEN left off as tormented Mikhal attempts to prove himself as a man who loves Alliana and can control his beast. Since I’d read TAKEN (the first in the series), I was prepared for Ms. Raymond’s many POV changes. The typos, formatting issues, misspellings, incorrect word choices (quite when it should be quiet) etc., were still present and in full force.

However, a curious thing happened. Since Ms. Raymond writes in multiple POVs, I found myself very interested in two secondary characters, Natalya and Lucian. The growing sexual tension between them not only held my interest, but I looked forward to reading about them almost more than Alliana and Mikhal. Most authors would’ve kept Natalya’s and Lucian’s story for another series, but not Ms. Raymond. I almost feel guilty because it’s like I’m getting two books for the price of one.

Extensive introspection throughout the book occurs just like in TAKEN and several scenes could have been shortened to increase the pacing and action. To compensate, I skimmed through some passages. But for all the hiccups, I remained interested in the storylines. Editing can be learned, but the ability to write an intriguing book that holds a reader’s attention requires a great imagination and an innate ability not everyone can master. Although I so wish Ms. Raymond would find a proper copy editor, I’m anxious to read TREASURED to learn how Alliana and Mikhal fare as parents while Natalya and Lucian struggle to deny growing (and inappropriate) feelings toward one another.

Please remember, you must be willing to overlook the editing issues and multiple POV changes. If you cannot then I’m not sure if you’ll enjoy the book. But if you can, the day might pass you by as you lose yourself within the storylines of these intriguing characters.

Focused. Strong. True.
